The strongman became an iconic figure from Victorian times, and the barbell became the ideal prop to showcase posture and strength. Yet the once-popular barbells are rarely found today. This example, originally painted white - we imagine to draw the eye in a Strongman's star turn - has somehow survived intact.

Both cast iron balls on this unique example are firmly connected to a central cast iron bar. Both balls bear a stamped number 21. We believe this indicates the weight of 21lbs. Together with the bar, the total weight is around three and a half stone.

As the white paint has worn, the surface pitted, and rust spots grown, the resulting creation of a complex patina shows handling, usage, and age.

The centre bar has a curious shallow indentation which we wonder held a name plate - we like to speculate this rare barbell was once owned by British strongman Thomas Inch, but, as with all folk items, its provenance remains only stories.

A unique opportunity to be the next custodian of a lovely piece of circus, folk theatre, and popular strongman history.

The photographs show the barbell oiled to highlight the texture of the piece. Length is 120cm.
